Legendary Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela’s cause of death disclosed

The Mayo Clinic defines septic shock as a «dramatic drop in blood pressure that can damage the lungs, kidneys, liver, and other organs,» when the body responds inappropriately to an infection, as stated on the death certificate of the 1981 NL Rookie of the Year and Cy Young Award winner.

Underlying causes stated on the certificate include decompensated alcoholic cirrhosis and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis cirrhosis.

The medical examiner believes he may have had Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare brain illness that causes rapid mental deterioration.

Valenzuela, 63, died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Oct. 22. The Mexican-born pitcher sparked «Fernandomania» as his baseball career took off with a bang.

He died soon before the World Series game between his Dodgers and the New York Yankees. The Dodgers donned a patch commemorating him throughout the five games and will do so throughout the 2025 season.

The Dodgers defeated the Yankees to win the World Series for the seventh time in franchise history, and the team’s victory parade and celebration fell on Valenzuela’s 64th birthday.
