Amid the avian flu outbreak, more eggs are being seized at the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to police, more people are trying to carry eggs across the U.S.-Mexico border as the price of eggs in the United States rises.

Eggs are vanishing from shop shelves amid a bird flu outbreak that has reduced poultry populations. Additionally, more people are crossing the border to purchase eggs.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports that between October 2024 and February, the number of eggs seized at ports of entry increased by 29% over the same period the previous year.

Joaquin Luken, executive director of the Smart Border Coalition, told NBC San Diego that people might not be aware that raw eggs are prohibited. «It’s common practice to get some groceries or medication and cross the border,» he said.

However, he suggested that anyone in possession of eggs to declare them at the border. He said the customer is more likely to receive a warning than a fine, but the eggs will stay with the agents.

A statement from the CBP stated that «it is generally prohibited to import raw or fresh eggs from Mexico into [the] United States due to concerns about diseases such as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza and Virulent Newcastle disease.»
