In the Highland region, evacuation alerts were still in force Wednesday as locals and emergency personnel braced for rain and potential flash flooding.
The neighborhood south of Greenspot Road, between Church Street and Merris Street, as well as the area east of Church Street to the foothills north of Highland Avenue and Weaver Street east to the Iron Bridge north of Greenspot Road, were all under a warning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department posted on social media, «Authorities continue to monitor storm conditions.» «Residents in the following areas should remain prepared to evacuate if necessary.»
Marie Mujica, whose mother resides in Highland along one of the storm channels, was optimistic that safety measures like K-rails and sandbags would have an impact.
«Just hoping that she doesn’t get a whole ton of water in there and just a bunch of mud again,» Mujica stated to ABC7. «She is retired, which is worrying. She shouldn’t have to endure this again, therefore.
The crusted dirt from the storm last month is still covering her mother’s once-green lawn. However, the house has before withstood the power of nature.
«Growing up, we’ve had water, rains, but never experienced what we’ve just experienced in 2010 and then just recently,» said Mujica.
