To remind members of the immigrant community of their legal rights, schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District are now issuing «red cards,» also called «Know Your Rights» cards, along with other materials.
According to the Community Resource Guide for Immigrant Angelenos, which was created by the Office of Immigrant Affairs of L.A. Mayor Karen Bass and is currently being distributed by LAUSD, the cards, which are roughly the size of a credit card, will assist immigrant Angelenos in «asserting their constitutional rights in encounters with federal law enforcement officials.»
The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) produced the documents, which are accessible to both citizens and non-citizens in 16 languages, including Spanish, Haitian Creole, and Tigrinya.
According to the ILRC, the files should be compatible with any print or copy shop because the cards are formatted as standard 3.5″ x 2″ business cards.
To order more than 1,000 red cards, businesses, private attorneys, and organizations should go to www.RedCardOrders.com. This website provides a union-run printer service that is set up to receive, print, and send the cards to clients.
The effort to hand out the cards follows newly elected President Donald Trump’s declaration that his administration would reverse a 2011 policy that forbade arrests in sensitive locations, including churches and schools, by permitting Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers to make arrests there.
