In the midst of a federal crackdown on illegal immigration and threats to so-called sanctuary cities, the City Council on Wednesday approved a set of motions aimed at protecting immigrants in Los Angeles.
By a vote of 10-0, council members directed staff to provide feedback on policies that would mandate that companies notify the city of any activity with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and advise employees of their rights prior to possible searches. The council also instructed city employees to find roughly $540,000 to continue providing immigration legal services. This would fill the void left by the Trump Administration’s freeze on such financing.
The following council members did not attend the vote: Adrin Nazarian, John Lee, Tim McOsker, Traci Park, and Nithya Raman.
By a vote of 12-0, the City Council also adopted two other measures. Following the introduction of changes by council members Monica Rodriguez and Ysabel Jurado, those motions needed separate action. For those votes, McOsker, Park, and Raman were not present.
The «Know Your Rights Campaign,» which will educate immigrants in Los Angeles on nondiscrimination protections, the city’s sanctuary policy, and other resources, was approved by council members.
